If you don’t know what The Asylum is you may be familiar with some of their titles: H. G. Wells War of the Worlds, King of the Lost Worlds, The Da Vinci Treasure, Pirates of Treasure Island, Snakes on a Train, AVH: Aliens vs. Hunter, Transmorphers, and the list goes on. They produce what’s known as mockbusters. Essentially they piggyback on the success of a blockbuster to get more people to watch their films. They tend to be lower budget films that have their own plot and usually some sexy subplot.
As for myself, I can’t get enough of them. The Asylum’s films serve two major purposes for me. They offer a fun knock-off byproduct that’s easy to digest and comes out two or three days before the actual movie. It’s like having a beef frank a few nights before getting a steak. The other is that they tend to work off of movies that are stuck at PG-13. I don’t know about you but I thought Transformers could have used a lesbian sub-plot, and you know what? Transmorphers totally does! It’s loads of fun and anyone who loves classic B-movies has to check some of these titles out. Not to mention that a good chunk of them has Lance Henriksen one of the classic “that guy”s of the movies. I first saw the guy in Pumpkinhead part whatever and now I definitely think he’s up there with Bruce Campell for that Oh-he’s-in-it-so-it’ll-be-at-least-kinda-good factor.
This should be reason enough for you to start looking up some titles to check out but if not, they still produce some totally original work e.g. Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus. The title should already have you squealing with glee and it only gets better. Yes it’s ridiculous, preposterous, and downright silly. All that is a good thing if you like having a good time watching movies. Which really is all The Asylum caters to. I’m sure they expect to have people complain about refunds, and being duped but that’s all your own damn fault. The Asylum is out there as a money-making enterprise and they offer up a certain product. It’s junk food, but we love junk food. So, if you only order from the dollar menu at McDonald’s I’m sure you’re the type of person who’d get a kick out of some of these flicks. If you’ve got a positive experience, please feel free to comment it up.
